Abstract
Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp is a major disease of cultivated strawberry Fragaria × ananassa This study identifies the Colletotrichum spp which causes strawberry anthracnose in the southwest of Spain A survey of the region was carried out and the strains isolated were identified as C acutatum by using the polymerase chain reaction PCR with genus and speciesspecific primers demonstrating that this species is currently the causal agent of strawberry anthracnose in the studied region The pathogenicity of C acutatum and C gloeosporioides strains was evaluated on two principal strawberry cultivars cvs Camarosa and Ventana under field conditions the latter being more pathogenic than the formerThis research was financed by the Spanish DGICYT AGL200204388C0202/AGR and AGL200613401CO202 and by the grant FPU of the Ministerio de Educacion y Ciencia AP20033902 Spain We would like to thank the Medina Group Agromedina and Viveros California in particular Antonio ArjonaBernal and Rocío Medina Muñoz for providing the strawberry field We thank Juan Carlos Velez Javier Palma and Antonio Infante for help with the field survey and pathogenicity testing We thank also Dr Neil Boonham for critical reading and editorial support of this manuscript
