Abstract
The corneal crystalline stromal dystrophy CSD is the most common type of corneal lipidic deposition in dogs CSD affects mainly young/adult dogs the most part of which are female Crispin 2002 It often presents as a symmetrical and bilateral corneal injury which is considered hereditary in some breed of dogs Whitley and Brian 1999 Crispin 2002 Pizzirani 2006 Although in veterinary literature CSD has never been connected with hyperlipoproteinemia a correlation has been shown between the worsening of the clinical signs of CSD and the blood lipidic increase during the oestrous cycle of the bitch or systemic diseases that can modify the lipidic metabolism Whitley and Brian 1999 Crispin 2002 Local ocular factors may also exert some influence on the clinical appearance of the corneal lesion Crispin 2002 The corneal lipidic deposition mostly unesterified cholesterol and phospholipids is due to a metabolic disorder in the fibroblasts of the anterior stroma
