Abstract
Greimann and Siegwart have edited an anthology which has been long overdue It contains 17 contributions broadly concerned with the relation between linguistic action and truth Furthermore the papers cover a wide range of subjects such as ‘deflationism vs inflationism’ ‘truth bearer’ ‘alethic anti realism’ ‘meaning’ ‘norms of assertion’ etc The book is subdivided into four parts “The illocutionary significance of the concept of truth” “Truth and assertion” “The normativity of truth” and “Truth and propositional meaning” For reasons of space I will choose some outstanding papers and sum up their central theses and argumentsPart I contains papers by William P Alston John R Searle and Geo Siegwart I would like to start with Searle’s “Illocutionary acts and the concept of truth” which is actually the second paper He argues that the role of the concept of truth in a theory of speech acts has been underestimated Although “true” and “false” appear to be notions with
