Abstract
This retrospective cohort study examined electronic medical records of HIVpositive patients in California N = 7834 to find the prevalence of any psychiatric condition and the associations between several factors and the likelihood of these disorders Approximately 53 of the patients in this study had a documented psychiatric condition including 23 who had a mood disorder 19 who had a substancerelated disorder and 16 who had an anxiety disorder After controlling for potential confounders significant positive associations p 0001 were found between female gender and the presence of any mood disorder adjusted odds ratio 95 confidence interval 95 CI = 158 126–199 or anxiety disorder AOR = 154 118–202 and between homosexual orientation and the presence of any psychiatric condition AOR = 133 115–155 mood disorder AOR = 171 142–207 or anxiety disorder AOR = 141 122–188 There were also significant negative associations between AfricanAmerican race and the presence of any psychiatric condition AOR = 068 060–077 mood disorder AOR = 074 064–086 anxiety disorder AOR = 043 036–052 or substancerelated disorder AOR = 078 067–091 and between state/federal insurance and the presence of any psychiatric condition AOR = 070 062–079 mood disorder AOR = 071 062–080 or anxiety disorder AOR = 077 066–089
