Abstract
The present study used a sample of 156 healthy elderly subjects between 57 and 85 years of age to examine concurrent validity of 3 MMSE components serial seven subtractions 3word recall and copying pentagons which are most frequently used in clinical practice as indicators of specific cognitive deficits Correlational analyses and examination of concordance rates were used to explore the relationship of 3 MMSE tasks with scores on neuropsychological tests The results of this study indicated that performance on MMSE components by elderly individuals should be interpreted with caution due to the effect of education on individual task performance questionable specificity of the tasks in assessing circumscribed cognitive domains emphasis on verbal tasks and high misidentification rate Aging Clin Exp Res 6 427432 1994
