Abstract
Inferior vena cava IVC filters are a safe and effective means of providing protection against lifethreatening pulmonary embolism PE in patients with contraindications to anticoagulation 1 The use of retrievable IVC filters RIVCFs has increased steadily over the years since their introduction in 2001 However low retrieval rates primarily from poor patient followup have led to complications from short and longterm indwelling filter placement We discuss a patient who presented to our institution with melena and anemia and who was ultimately found to have an RIVCFrelated caval penetration into the duodenum identified on upper endoscopy almost 4 years after initial placementWe discuss the patient’s clinical course and outcome and examine its relevance in relation to the 2010 US Food and Drug Administration FDA recommendations for filter retrieval the need for interventional radiologists to strictly abide by indications for filter placement and the
