Abstract
The possibility to improve the operation of turbocharged combustion engines by using additional discontinuous elements in the air management system was examined at the Graz University of Technology and the Virtual Vehicle Competence Centre Thus the harnessing of the exhaust gas enthalpy will be enhanced Three different engines were investigated by means of simulation The found benefits are higher turbine power less pumping work enhanced exhaust gas recirculation and othersCharacteristic of all uptodate gas exchange systems is the interaction between discontinuous and continuous components The discontinuous component is the valve train operated synchronously to the engine’s working process The continuous components comprise the turbocharger and when used the exhaust gas recirculation system EGR system both actuated in a quasi steadystate mode This dual nature of the gas exchange system has a major impact on the operation and cooperation of theThe authors would like to acknowledge the financial support of the Comet K2 Competence Centres for Excellent Technologies Programme of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport Innovation and Technology BMVIT the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economy Family and Youth BMWFJ the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG the Province of Styria and the Styrian Business Promotion Agency SFG All simulations were performed with the 1D CFD code Boost by AVL wich was provided as part of the University Partnership Programme
