Abstract
BMW has developed a new modular inline engine system that includes both gasoline and diesel units and ensures a high level of commonality The following report describes the development of the three and fourcylinder diesel engines The new power units will be used for the first time in the Mini and the BMW X3 A report on the new gasoline engines was published in MTZ 6Since 1991 BMW is rigorously pursuing the modular design approach for diesel engines In order to be able to react flexibly to future requirements and simultaneously bundle the resources for the enhancement of more efficient combustion engines BMW has now developed a modular design system that covers both gasoline and diesel engines 1 2 In the final stage this newly developed engine family will comprise all three four and sixcylinder gasoline and diesel engines The objective here is to build all inline engines on the basis of the same engine concept and
