Abstract

The “food or fuel” discussion has severely dampened the euphoria over alternative fuels from renewable resources Clariant has now developed what it calls the sunliquid process for the costeffective production of ethanol fuel from agricultural residues The first industrialscale reference plant could already be realised in 2013/2014The transport sector is responsible for around 25 of CO2emissions and consumes almost 50 of global oil production To protect the climate and environment and also reduce dependence on imported oil biofuels form an indispensable part of any fuel strategy In Europe the US South America and other regions specific measures are being taken to increase the amount of sustainable biofuels contained in fuel In this context the key term is “sustainable” since not every type of biofuel automatically meets all the criteria Especially in recent months many of the biofuels currently on the market have come under criticism — in terms of
