Abstract
In this issue of the journal Frans Wackers and Jeffrey Leppo trace the origins of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology ASNC which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year1 They cite two classic papers that heralded the modern era of nuclear cardiology One was the paper from Zaret et al2 published 40 years ago in the New England Journal of Medicine reporting the success of potassium43 K43 imaging of myocardial perfusion at rest and exercise The other was the report by Strauss et al3 on measurement of the left ventricular ejection fraction by radionuclide angiography In 1975 Berman et al4 reported on the use of rubidium81 myocardial perfusion imaging which was performed with a scintillation camera equipped with a special collimator that prevented penetration of the highenergy emission of both rubidium81 and rubidium82m a contaminant Also in 1975 Dr Wackers et al5from Amsterdam published the first clinical application of thallium201 Tl201 imaging
