Abstract
The axial compressive failure triggered by kink band instabilities of multidirectional fibre composites is the topic of investigation herein Therefore a previous analytical model for unidirectional composites based on geometric relationships and energy principles is utilized to account for the failure mechanism of the kinked layers Subsequently the model is significantly extended to account for the nonkinked layers of the compound Their energy contributions are evaluated using classical laminate theory and a Rayleigh–Ritz approximation for the deformed configuration without the necessity of introducing further generalized coordinates Parameter studies are undertaken and the model is validated against published experimental data yielding very good comparisons
