Abstract
In June 2012 the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro brought together heads of state and government officials from around the world in a meeting that resulted in a document entitled “The Future We Want” That document outlined a common vision In its framework for action it recognized the significance of good land and soil management It stated the need for urgent action to reverse land degradation reaffirmed its resolve to fight desertification to monitor and restore degraded lands worldwide and it emphasized the importance to develop and use sciencebased methods to assess the extent of desertification land degradation and drought
