Abstract
Interaction of the innate with the adaptive arm of the immune system has gained a lot of attention in the past several years due to an increased appreciation of the importance of proper activation of innate immunity for the development of effective adaptive immunity 1 2 This interdependence was first shown in response to viral infections It is now clear that what goes on in response to viruses is not unique but rather a typical example of how the immune system works The particular effector cells or molecules involved may vary with disease but evidence is always found of a bridge between one or more players of the innate and the adaptive immune systems The 2004 Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research devoted one of its major symposia to the topic of “Bridging the Innate and Adaptive Immune Responses” in the process of tumor recognition and rejection
