Abstract
Professor Haruma Kawaguchi is a distinguished scientist in colloid and polymer science On the occasion of the International Symposium on Advanced Particles—chaired by him—this special issue is in recognition of his achievements to acknowledge his contributions to research and educationProfessor Kawaguchi was born in 1944 graduated in chemistry from Keio University in 1966 and received the degree of Master of Engineering in 1968 He was appointed assistant professor at the same university in 1969 After receiving the degree of Doctor of Engineering from Keio University in 1977 with the thesis entitled “Emulsion polymerization initiated by polyoxyethylenetype emulsifierceric ion redox system” he was appointed lecturer at the same university in the same year Following his education he traveled to the United States where he worked as a Research Associate at the University of Massachusetts 1978–1979 During this time he was involved in the study on headtohead polymers with Professor Otto Vogl Upon returning to Japan he was appointed associate professor at Keio University in 1982 and became professor of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Technology Keio University in 1989 Whereas he will retire from Keio University in 2009 he will continue his pursuits in science and education at Kanagawa University as a professorAlways dedicated to service Prof Kawaguchi has served chairman or president of many Japanese scientific societies and international conferences held in Japan He served as vicepresident 1999–2002 and president 2006–present of the Society of Fiber Science Technology Japan and was chairman of the 7th Iketani Conference International Symposium on Advanced Technology of Fine Particles held at Yokohama Japan in 1997 He was program leader of the 21st century COE Center Of Excellence program “Function Creation Oriented LifeConjugated Chemistry” selected and promoted by the Ministry of Education Culture Sports Science and Technology Japan MEXT from 2002 to 2007 He is also chairman of the 2nd International Symposium on Advanced Particles to be held at Yokohama Japan in 2009His extensive body of research includes several innovations in emulsion polymerization and other heterogeneous polymerizations functional polymeric microspheres hydrogels biomaterials and many more aspects of colloid and interface science He has written over 180 papers which appeared in Colloid and Polymer Science and other leading journals several books and 20 patentsHis work in science and engineering has garnered many acknowledgements of excellence For his studies of biomedical polymers the Japanese Society of Biomaterials gave him a research award in 2000 He was awarded the Minister Prize of MEXT in 2005 for his studies on affinity latex He was also given the Tejima Memorial Invention Award in 2003 from the Tejima Industrial Education Foundation and the Fukuzawa Award in 2007 from Keio University
