Abstract

At the beginning of the 19721973 academic session six twoyear medical schools admitted students into their entering classes For the newest the University of MinnesotaDuluth this class was its first The University of North Dakota School of Medicine on the other hand dates its beginning to 1905 The others are components of Brown University and of the universities of Hawaii Nevada and South Dakota In 1972 Dartmouth and Rutgers formerly twoyear schools were provisionally accredited as degreegranting institutions Hawaii and Brown have announced plans and requested approval for granting degrees action by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education is pending The Duluth program is planned to become a degreegranting school almost immediately Pressures are mounting for all twoyear schools to convert The responses of the educational institutions the accrediting agencies and the state legislatures that will be asked to fund the programs will surely influence the quality of medical education
