The need for quality in health care is self evident It is a desirable imperative in many aspects of human endeavor from industrial production to interpersonal interaction In industry we recognize W Edwards Deming as one of the patron saints of quality In health care the late Avedis Donabedian might easily claim that honor among others for his dedication to quality assurance Evidence of his teachings is at work in many spheres including Medicares quality improvement efforts1 His latest book is an introduction to the principles of quality assurance in the medical field
