Abstract
A Gramnegative facultatively anaerobic nonmotile and rodshaped bacterial strain designated SMK112T was isolated from a tidal flat sediment on the western coast of Korea Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequences showed that strain SMK112T belonged to the genus Shewanella clustering with the type strain of Shewanella amazonensis Strain SMK112T exhibited the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity value 970 and the highest gyrB sequence similarity value 878 to S amazonensis SB2BT respectively Strain SMK112T contained simultaneously both menaquinones and ubiquinones the predominant menaquinone was MK7 and the predominant ubiquinones were Q7 and Q8 The major fatty acids 10 of the total fatty acids detected in strain SMK112T were the MIDI system summed feature 3 isoC150 2OH and/or C161 ω7c isoC150 C171 ω8c and C160 The DNA G+C content of strain SMK112T was 580 mol and its mean DNA–DNA relatedness value with S amazonensis ATCC 700329T was 15 ± 46 Differential phenotypic properties together with the phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness revealed that strain SMK112T is distinguishable from recognized Shewanella species On the basis of the data presented strain SMK112T is considered to represent a novel Shewanella species for which the name Shewanella litorisediminis sp nov is proposed The type strain is SMK112T =KCTC 23961T = CCUG 62411TThis work was supported by the Program for Collection of Domestic Biological Resources from the National Institute of Biological Resources NIBR and BK 21 program from the Ministry of Education Science and Technology MEST of the Republic of Korea
