Abstract
Editor’s Note The following comments are extracted from a persuasive speech given by Dr Nam P Suh assistant director for engineering National Science Foundation during November’s National Congress on Engineering Education NC2E Sponsored by a task force which included the Accreditation Board of Technology ABET the National Academy of Engineering and the National Science Foundation the congress gathered 400 engineers from industry government and academia to according to ABET President George M Norby “review all the higher education studies that are applicable to engineering and determine whether their recommendations should be included in engineering curricula” Toward this end dozens of engineering education issues were addressed and debated by the attendees who ultimately recommended a number of motions designed to provide a few of the guidelines necessary to develop and enhance the vitality of today’s undergraduate and graduate engineering studies thereby providing a strong framework from which to address the critical domestic issue of diminishing competitiveness It is to these areas that Dr Suh directs his most timely comments
