Abstract
Comparativeeffectiveness research data currently guide good clinical practice GCP A daytoday GCP should be based on best evidence usually provided by results from phase 3 randomized controlled trials RCTs Although RCTs represent the best tools of comparativeeffectiveness research and evidencebased medicine in many cases such data are not availableMoreover because biomedical sciences and modern technologies are rapidly evolving data from RCTs in many cases eg for novel surgical devices such as laparoscopic or robotic technology will require long time perhaps a decade or more Therefore results from retrospectives studies are useful Such data for the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic rectal surgery are provided by Denoya et al 1 in a recent issue of the Surgical Endoscopy What is new in this report
