Abstract
Patients whose gastric cancer is detected at an early stage in the absence of clinical symptoms mostly through endoscopic screening of the population have an excellent prognosis Many patients with early gastric cancer EGC can be cured by endoscopic submucosal dissection ESD or endoscopic mucosal resection EMR instead of traditional surgical open or laparoscopic resection This strategy results in the best possible quality of life QoLAccording to International guidelines TNM and Japanese histology should be considered together with tumor size and gastric wall invasion Usually ESD or EMR is recommended for patients with EGC and good differentiation of cancer cells In the West the Lauren classification into intestinal type diffuse type or mixed type adenocarcinoma commonly is used but not in Asian countries In an effort to increase the number of patients who benefit from ESD patients with nonintestinal type cancer also are included but the criteria for such a
