Abstract
Adhesion between rubbers and metals is often the main cause of machine trouble Therefore efficient utilization of rubber in dynamic and static applications requires the modification of the adhesion property of the rubber surface without affecting the bulk characteristics In this work we have studied the mechanism of the reduction in adhesion force between medical rubber chlorideisobuteneisoprene rubber CIIR and stainless steel by using surface waveexcited plasma treatment of the rubber surface with oxygen and argon gases Experimental results showed that surface roughness derivations increased by about 10 times across the treatment at maximum corresponding to the increase in time In addition the microscale Young’s modulus of treated CIIR sheet increased by about 63 times at maximum from that of the untreated CIIR sheet These changes in Young’s modulus and roughness at the surface of CIIR sheet are considered to be the main reasons for the plasmaassisted reduction of adhesion force between stainless steel ball SUS 440C JIS and CIIR sheetJongHyoung Kim received his BS degree at the School of Mechanical Engineering from Yeungnam University Korea in 2006 He then received his MS in Mechanical Engineering from Kyungpook National University Korea He is currently PhD candidate at the school of Mechanical Science and Engineering Nagoya University Japan His research interests include tribology polymer and plasma treatmentNoritsugu Umehara received his Doctorate in Engineering from Tohoku University Japan in 1988 After his academic career as a Research associate and an Associate Professor in Tohoku University he became Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Nagoya Institute of Technology Japan in 2002 He is currently Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering department in Nagoya University Japan His research interests include tribology and greenmanufacturingHiroyuki Kousaka received his Doctorate in Engineering from Kyoto University Japan in 2003 After his academic career as a Research associate in Nagoya Institute of Technology he became a Research Associate in 2004 and Lecturer in 2006 in Nagoya University Japan He is currently Associate Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering Department in Nagoya University Japan His research interests include plasma tribology and advanced surface manufacturing
