Abstract
The hemodynamics of the carotid artery was numerically investigated with an approach of fluidstructure interaction FSI To predict the blood flow and arterial deformation of carotid artery a framework for the FSI analysis was developed by coupling computational fluid dynamics and structural analysis Using this framework the hemodynamics of the carotid artery was simulated with the patientspecific clinical data of the arterial geometry pulsatile blood flow blood rheology and arterial deformation It is found that the hemodynamic characteristics of the carotid artery are significantly affected by its geometric factors and flow conditions and relatively low values of the wall shear stress were observed in the postplaque dilated region of the carotid bifurcated area which is known to be responsible for the growth of an atherosclerotic plaque Since the characteristics of the blood flow in a carotid artery are also affected by the hemodynamic factors the effects of the cardiac output distal vascular resistance and blood viscosity on hemodynamics were also numerically analyzedSang Hyuk Lee received his PhD from Sogang University in 2012 and is working as a researcher in Multiphenomena CFD Engineering Research Center ERC Currently his research interests are related to multiphysics computational fluid dynamics and hemodynamics simulationSeongwon Kang is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Sogang University He received his PhD from Stanford University in 2008 and joined Sogang University in 2010 His research interests include numerical methods for a complex geometry and turbulent flows with combustionNahmkeon Hur is a Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Sogang University in Seoul Korea and a director of Multiphenomena CFD Engineering Research Center ERC funded by National Research Foundation of Korea He received his PhD from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1988 Before joining the university in 1996 he worked as a Senior Engineer at the Analysis and Design Application Company in the USA and as a Senior/Principal Researcher at Korea Institute of Science and Technology His research interests include multiphysics and multidynamics CFD and its applicationSeulKi Jeong is an Associate Professor of the Department of Neurology at Chonbuk National University Medical School Hospital He received his PhD from Chonnam National University Medical School in 2004 and joined Chonbuk National University Medical School Hospital in 2004 His research interests are related to physiology and hemodynamics in cerebrovascular diseases
