Abstract
Three aerobic bacterial consortia GY2 GS3 and GM2 were enriched from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarboncontaminated soils with watersilicone oil biphasic systems An aerobic bacterial strain utilizing phenanthrene as the sole carbon and energy source was isolated from bacterial consortium GY2 and identified as Sphingomonas sp strain GY2B Within 48 h and at 30°C the strain metabolized 991 of phenanthrene 100 mg/l added to batch culture in mineral salts medium and the cell number increased by about 40fold Three metabolites 1hydroxy2naphthoic acid 1naphthol and salicylic acid were identified by gas chromatographic mass spectrometry and UV–visible spectroscopy analysis A degradation pathway was proposed based on the identified metabolites In addition to phenanthrene strain GY2B could use other aromatic compounds such as naphthalene 2naphthol salicylic acid catechol phenol benzene and toluene as a sole source of carbon and energyThis study was supported by fundings from the National Natural Science Foundation P R China No20077008 and No40502031 the Key Program of Guangdong Nature Science Foundation No 05103552 and the Science and Technology Program of Guangdong Province No 2004B20501006 We thank Dr Huihong Zhu and her colleagues of Guangdong Institute of Microbiology for 16S rDNA analysis We are also grateful to Dr Weilin Huang of Rutgers University for language editing on the manuscript
