Abstract
Interestingly the authors have utilized transferrin saturation 16 as the tool to define iron deficiency as against the more commonly used serum ferritin Transferrin saturation is the ratio of serum iron and total ironbinding capacity TIBC Values below 20 and certainly below 18 suggest an inadequate supply of iron for hemoglobin synthesis and red cell production 2 A very low 15 transferrin saturation is characteristic of iron deficiency however by itself is not diagnostic 2 The accuracy of measurement of transferrin saturation for predicting the presence of iron deficiency is second to estimation of serum ferritin 3 4 If inflammation can be excluded the
