Abstract
RYGB resulted in a significantly greater loss of weight and body mass index than BPD Both RYGB and BPD were associated with a significant increase in PYY significantly greater for BDP p = 0001 Ghrelin rose significantly after RYGB p = 0022 but not after BPD After surgery PYY correlated positively with weight r = 0416 p = 0009 Ghrelin did not correlate significantly with any of the variables studied Analysis of variance showed that only the type of surgery contributed significantly to explain the variances in the PYY p = 0002 and ghrelin p = 0018BPD results in a greater increase in PYY and a lower weight loss than RYGB However only RYGB was associated with a significant increase in ghrelin The differing weight loss according to the type of bariatric surgery does not seem to be explained by changes arising in PYY and ghrelinThis work was supported in part by a grant from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III CP04/00133 and by a grant from Fundación Salud 2000 2006 The research group belongs to the Ciber Fisiopatología Obesidad y Nutrición CB06/03/0018 and Ciber Diabetes y Enfermedades Metabólicas CB07/08/0019 of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III The authors declare that there was no conflict of interest associated with this study We also thank Ian Johnstone for the English language version of the text
