Abstract

Anjana Ray Huw D Williams A mutant of Pseudomonas aeruginosa that lacks ctype cytochromes has a functional cyanideinsensitive oxidase FEMS Microbiology Letters Volume 135 Issue 1 January 1996 Pages 123–129 https//doiorg/101111/j157469681996tb07976xAbstract Using transposon mutagenesis and screening for the loss of the ability to oxidise the artificial electron donor NNN′N′tetrarnethylpphenylenediarnine we have isolated a mutant of Pseudomonas aeruginosa that lacks all ctype cytochromes This mutant is unable to grow anaerobically with nitrate as a terminal electron acceptor Analysis of its respiratory function indicates that the mutant has lost its cytochrome c oxidaseterminated respiratory pathway but the cyanideinsensitive oxidaseterminated branch remains functional Complementation of the mutant by in vivo cloning led to recovery of the wildtype characteristics These data are consistent with the idea that the cyanideinsensitive respiratory pathway does not contain haem c and that the pathways terminal oxidase is a quinol oxidase
