Abstract

Ten 12monthold male clinically healthy young blue neck breed ostriches Struthio camelus from Zabol district of Sistan Baluchestan province Iran were blood sampled in plain tubes for harvesting serum The concentrations of total protein albumin cholesterol HDL cholesterol LDL cholesterol triglyceride uric acid calcium inorganic phosphorus and the activity of aspartate aminotransferase AST alanine aminotransferase ALT and gamma glutamyl transferase GGT were measured The following results were obtained total protein 353 ± 2 g/l albumin 164 ± 153 g/l globulin 189 ± 08 g/l total cholesterol 167 ± 011 mmol/l LDL cholesterol 068 ± 007 mmol/l HDL cholesterol 067 ± 002 mmol/l triglyceride 070 ± 01 mmol/l uric acid 30215 ± 2081 μmol/l calcium 227 ± 015 mmol/l inorganic phosphorus 181 ± 013 mmol/l AST 2463 ± 224 IU/l ALT 84 ± 052 IU/l and GGT activity 269 ± 297 IU/l Correlations between measured parameters were also determined Blood biochemical values determined in this study can be considered as reference data for disease diagnosis in yearling African blue neck ostriches S camelus in IranThe authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support for this work that was provided by the Vice Chancellor for Research at Birjand University and the kind help of animal research center of Zabol district especially Mr Ghazzaghi for completing this study Also the authors acknowledge with grateful appreciation the kind assistance of Dr Wassim Tawbi for critical reading and editing the manuscript
