Abstract
The use of rigid and flexible ureterorenoscopy URS has increased dramatically in the last 10 years URS is now the treatment modality of choice for many patients with urinary tract stones 1 Generally ureterorenoscopy for upper urinary tract stones is a very welltolerated procedure with very low complication rates However serious complications are directly related to the timing of the operation As use of the ureteroscopic approach for complex upper urinary system stones is gradually increasing cumulative operative times will doubtlessly be prolonged and complication rates will increase Complications of ureteroscopy can occur secondary to increased intrarenal pressure or inability to access the stone 2The use of small and less invasive modern ureteroscopes together with better designed intracorporeal lithotriptors and a greater understanding of the principles of URS techniques has led to gradual decreases in complications of ureteral stone treatment 3All procedures performed in studies involving human participants were in accordance with the ethical standards of the institutional and/or national research committee and with the 1964 Helsinki Declaration and its later amendments or comparable ethical standards
