Abstract

Patients with longstanding and extensive ulcerative colitis UC and Crohns disease of the colon have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer CRC A metaanalysis published in 2001 including 116 studies from around the world reported the risk of CRC in patients with UC as 2 after 10 years 8 after 20 years and 18 after 30 years of disease1 Data from a 30year prospective surveillance program in the UK published in 2004 reported a lower risk of CRC in patients with UC of 25 at 20 years 76 at 30 years and 108 at 40 years2 While this suggests that the risk of developing CRC is lower than previously thought CRC is still a significant concern for patients with UC
