Abstract
The cumulative incidence of ventilatorassociated pneumonia VAP among patients admitted to the intensive care unit ICU who have acquired an infection has been reported to be 10–25 accounting for 50 of the antibiotics prescribed in the ICU 1 and increasing patient mortality by 20–55 2 Implementing ventilator care bundles as recommended in the National Healthcare Safety Network manual 3 reduces the risk of VAP and improves patient outcomes 2We conducted a retrospective study of patients admitted to the ICUs of a level1 200bed Indian trauma centre during a 3year period 2011–2014 to evaluate the impact of intensive preventive efforts implemented to reduce the incidence of VAP The data have been presented at an international conference 4The authors certify that they have no commercial association or financial involvement eg employment consultancies equity interest honoraria stock ownership stock options grants patents received or pending that might pose a conflict of interest in connection with this article All work was conducted at a government institution which does not receive outside funding support There is no conflict of interest among the authors
