Abstract

The genus Senecio of the family Asteraceae consists of approximately 1000 species worldwide and in India it is represented by 43 species 1 Senecio tenuifolius Burmf is an erect glabrous herb growing up to 50 cm height and commonly found on the dry hills of the Western Ghats from Konkan southwards to Kerala up to an altitude of 1500 m 2 In traditional medicine the leaves of this plant are used for emollient and vulnerary remedies 2Various solvent extracts of the leaves of S tenuifolius viz hexane chloroform ethyl acetate and methanol including aqueous extracts have been reported to have antimicrobial activity against one registered Staphylococcus aureus and two clinical isolates methicillinresistant and methicillinsensitive S aureus 3 The secondary metabolites pyrrolizidine senkirkine Oacetyl senkirkine senecionine and integerrimine have been identified from S tenuifolius 4 The essential oil compositions of endemic species of the genus Senecio
