Abstract
To examine the crosssectional associations of the serum uric acid level and hyperuricemia HU with the radiographic features of osteoarthritis OA including osteophytes OST and joint space narrowing JSN a total of 4685 subjects were included in this study Blood samples were drawn from all subjects Serum uric acid and some other indexes were detected OST and JSN were assessed for each subject according to the Osteoarthritis Research Society International OARSI atlas A multivariable logistic analysis model was applied to test the target associations after adjusting a number of potential confounding factors The prevalence of OST was increased in the highest tertile of uric acid compared to the lowest in female subjects OR 146 95 CI 107–199 P for trend = 002 Meanwhile a positive association between OST and HU was observed in female subjects OR 143 95 CI 101–203 P = 005 However serum uric acid and HU were not significantly associated with JSN in male subjects The findings of this study indicated that the serum uric acid concentration and prevalence of HU are positively associated with OST of the knee in the female population Level of evidence Crosssectional study Level IIIThis work was supported by the Hunan Provincial Innovation Foundation for Postgraduate CX2014A005 the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of Central South University the National Natural Science Foundation of China No 81201420 81272034 and 81472130 the Provincial Science Foundation of Hunan No 14JJ3032 the Scientific Research Project of the Development and Reform Commission of Hunan Province 20131199 the Scientific Research Project of Science and Technology Office of Hunan Province 2013SK2018 and the Doctoral Scientific Fund Project of the Ministry of Education of China 20120162110036
