The Effect Of Calcium And Vitamin D Supplements On Blood Pressure And Calcium Metabolism In Elderly Chinese American Journal of Hypertension Volume 8 Issue 4 Pt 2 April 1995 Page 54A https//doiorg/101016/0895706195975626To examine the effects of calcium and vitamin D supplement on blood pressure BP and calcium metabolism a randomised doubleblind 2×2 factorial intervention study was conducted in 120 institutionalised elderly subjects They were randomly allocated into four groups to receive 1 calcium 800 mg/day + vitamin D3 placebo 2 vitamin D3 5 ug/day + calcium placebo 3 calcium + vitamin D3 or 4 placebo treatment BP was measured and a 24 h urine specimen and an 8 h fasting blood sample were collected at the time of recruitment before treatment and after 2 11 and 20 weeks of treatment The changes in urinary calcium levels and plasma vitamin D concentrations were highly correlated with corresponding treatment in each group indicating good compliance After 20 weeks of interventional therapy systolic BP
