Abstract
Charalambos Vlachopoulos Nikolaos Ioakeimidis Konstantinos Rokkas Constantina Aggeli Andreas Michaelidis Constantinos Aznaouridis Thanos Askitis Christodoulos Stefanadis P405 Prevalence of asymptomatic coronary artery disease in men with vasculogenic erectile dysfunction A prospective angiographic study American Journal of Hypertension Volume 18 Issue S4 May 2005 Page 152A https//doiorg/101016/jamjhyper200503423Erectile dysfunction shares many risk factors with coronary artery disease Endothelial dysfunction plays a key role in the pathogenesis of erectile dysfunction The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the incidence of asymptomatic coronary artery disease in men with erectile dysfunction of vascular origin35 consecutive asymptomatic men aged 40–70 years with nonpsychogenic and nonhormonal erectile dysfunction were comprehensively evaluated using medical history exercise treadmill test and stress echocardiography Patients who had positive one or both of the two noninvasive procedures were referred for coronary angiography in order to document coronary artery disease and evaluate the severity of the diseaseThe mean time interval between the onset of erectile dysfunction and cardiological assessment was 20 months range 2–48 Smoking 24 pts/68 hypertension 21 pts/60 and hyperlipidemia 19 pts/54 were the most common risk factors Moreover 26 74 men had two or more risk factors Ten 285 patients with erectile dysfunction had positive one or both of the two noninvasive procedures and one patient presented with myocardial infarction before he completed the noninvasive investigation Coronary angiography performed in 7 patients with positive one or both of the two noninvasive procedures and in the patient with myocardial infarction demonstrated that 1 patient had twovessel disease Diagonal+RCA and 5 patients had singlevessel disease 1 pt LAD 3 pts LCx and 1 pt proximal LAD and ectasiaA considerable proportion 20 of patients with erectile dysfunction of vascular origin has angiographically documented silent coronary artery disease These findings support the strategy that patients with erectile dysfunction should undergo further cardiovascular evaluation
