Timothy J Bell Simon Tang Michael J Jamieson P435 Evaluation of hypertension prevalence and blood pressure goal attainment using data from the 1999–2000 national health and nutrition examination survey nhanes American Journal of Hypertension Volume 17 Issue S1 May 2004 Page 193A https//doiorg/101016/jamjhyper2004035094241 NHANES respondents aged ≥ 20 years with both SBP and DBP readings were included in the analysis Respondents were categorized by a number of variables including age gender race smoking obesity hypertension SBP ≥ 140 mm Hg DBP ≥ 90 mm Hg or currently taking antihypertensive medication hypertension treatment status and diabetes All population counts were generated using SAS statistical softwareOf the total US adult population of 201 million m 562 m 279 were estimated to be hypertensive including both diagnosed and undiagnosed of whom 327 m 582 were estimated to be receiving medication and 177 m 315 were at the recommended SBP+DBP goal of 140/90 mm Hg The SBP goal of 140 mm Hg was attained by 240 m patients 427 and the DBP goal of 90 mm Hg by 417 m patients 742 Goal attainment SBP+DBP only SBP only DBP was best in white patients 338 430 784 followed by blacks 285 402 680 and Hispanics 238 369 703 Other factors that had a detrimental effect on goal attainment included smoking 337 461 721 achieved SBP+DBP SBP only DBP only goals obesity 331 478 694 achieved SBP+DBP SBP only DBP only goals and diabetes 206 265 699 achieved diabetes goals of 130/80 SBP 130 and DBP 80 mmHg Goal attainment appeared to be lower in patients aged 40 years or ≥ 70 yearsDespite a high prevalence of hypertension in the US approximately half of the cases are currently treated and almost a third of these achieve current SBP+DBP recommendations Overall it appears that more patients achieve their DBP goal than SBP goal
