Peter Jordan Bancroftian filariasis An assessment of its economic importance in Tanganyika Transactions of The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Volume 49 Issue 3 May 1955 Pages 271–279 https//doiorg/101016/0035920355900705On questioning in the field a small series of microfilaria carriers it was found that nearly 50 per cent had recurrent attacks of groin or scrotal pains compared to 34 per cent of persons without microfilaraemia but reports from large commercial firms in East Africa and from the Army authorities indicated that the early symptoms of filariasis were not considered of any economic importanceAn investigation was made into the morbidity of hydrocoele and elephantiasis cases Between 21 per cent and 37 per cent of persons with hydrocoele and between 61 per cent and 76 per cent of those with elephantiasis suffered attacks of incapacitating pain
