R Lainson J StrangwaysDixon The epidemiology of dermal leishmaniasis in British Honduras Part II Reservoirhosts of Leishmania mexicana among the forest rodents Transactions of The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Volume 58 Issue 2 March 1964 Pages 136–153 https//doiorg/101016/0035920364900033A variety of wild and laboratory animals were tested for susceptibility to Leishmania mexicana in attempts to indicate potential reservoirhosts Of the wild animals only the cottonrat Sigmodon hispidus was readily infected Among laboratory animals the most susceptible were hamsters mice gerbils and rats in that order It was concluded therefore that the reservoirhosts of L mexicana would best be sought among the subOrder Myomorpha of the Order RodentiaA focus of infection in the forest was pinpointed by the isolation of L mexicana from a batch of sandflies trapped in a selected area About 300 insects were triturated together in Lockes solution and inoculated into the skin of a hamster A lesion containing LD bodies developed at the inoculation site
