Abstract
Nitrates may have beneficial effects on bone To determine if nitrates were associated with increased bone mineral density BMD we conducted a secondary analysis using data from subjects in a prospective study Subjects reporting nitrate use had increased BMD compared with nonusers confirming that nitrates have positive BMD effects in women and menWe used linear regression models stratified by gender and adjusted for age weight and baseline differences to determine the association between daily nitrate use and BMD among subjects participating in the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study All results are reported as annualised percent change in BMD at the hip and spine among nitrate users compared to nonusersWe included 1419 men 71 reported daily nitrate use and 2587 women 97 reported daily nitrate use Male nonusers had decreased hip BMD −13 95 confidence interval 95CI = −16 to −11 and increased spine BMD 28 95CI = 25 to 31 Male nitrate users had increased hip BMD 14 95CI = 01 to 28 and spine BMD 45 95CI = 32 to 57 Among women nonusers had decreased hip BMD −19 95CI = −21 to −17 and increased spine BMD 21 95CI = 19 to 24 whilst users had an increase in hip BMD 20 95CI = 12 to 28 and spine BMD 41 95CI = 34 to 49The majority of the authors of this work believe the original conclusions presented have been compromised by inconsistencies in the data and the article should be retracted a decision supported by the Editors of Osteoporosis International The following authors agree with this retraction decision David Goltzman David A Hanley Alexandra Papaioannou Jerilynn C Prior Robert G Josse The following author could not be reached for comment Sophie A Jamal The authors deeply regret the impact of this action on the work of other investigatorsThis study was supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Merck Frosst Canada Eli Lilly Canada Novartis Pharmaceuticals The Alliance for Better Bone Health SanofiAventis and Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals Canada The Dairy Farmers of Canada and The Arthritis Society
