Abstract
An aqueousorganic biphasic system was established and used with whole cells of Oenococcus oeni to reduce 2octanone to R2octanol The conversion reached 99 when the Tris/borate buffer was increased from 50 mM to 300 mM in the aqueous phase In addition the conversion increased as the log P value of the organic solvent changed from 05 to 66 Under optimized conditions the conversion of R2octanol reached 99 from 05 M 2octanone with an optical purity of 99 ee The biphasic system allows the antiPrelog reduction of aliphatic and aromatic ketones to furnish Rconfigurated alcohols in high optical purity as wellFinancial supports of the National Natural Science Foundation of China NSFC No 20376031 the National Key Basic Research and Development Program of China 973 Program No 2003CB716008 the Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University PCSIRT No IRT0532 and Ministry of Education PR China under the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University NCET are gratefully acknowledged
