Abstract
Increased serum CA 125 levels can be associated with chronic liver disease and particularly with liver cirrhosis 1 2 3 4 In addition a relationship has recently been described between CA 125 and the amount of ascites 5 and a significant decrease of CA 125 after largevolume paracentesis 5 or liver transplantation 6 in patients with decompensated cirrhosisHowever in reviewing the English literature we found no reports or studies showing the course of serum CA 125 levels after the placement of a peritoneovenous surgical shunt We report a case of a marked decrease of high serum CA 125 levels after Denver shunt placement in a patient with liver cirrhosis complicated by refractory ascitesA 51yearold Caucasian man affected by alcoholrelated liver cirrhosis ChildPugh score 12 was admitted to our hospital for refractory ascites the patient presented a slight encephalopathy Table 1 and esophageal varices with a low risk of bleeding
