Abstract
Acute portal vein thrombosis PVT may occur in the presence or absence of underlying liver disease and can be due to multiple causes Because of the heterogeneity of both the extent of thrombosis and the predisposing factors there are no clearly defined treatment guidelines Recent studies suggest that therapeutic anticoagulation can result in complete or partial recanalization of the portal vein in 80 of patients with severe complications of therapy in less than 5 of patients 1 2 However the optimal duration of anticoagulation has yet to be determined Expert opinion recommends anticoagulation for at least 3 months with the consideration of permanent anticoagulation for underlying hypercoagulable states 3 4
