Abstract
In 1962 75 distinguished historians ranked the American Presidents and placed Dwight Eisenhower twentysecond tied with Chester A Arthur Forty years later another group of scholars revised this list placing Eisenhower 9th just behind Truman and Reagan in a category labeled the “Near Greats Presidents”The answer to this phenomenon lies in the fact that the post Eisenhower generation of scholars and historians had an opportunity to view his life without ideological blinders Those who first wrote about Eisenhower were liberals and Democrats who regarded him as politically naïve and over his head as President
