Abstract
Hypoxiainducible factor1α HIF1α plays an important role in tumour progression and metastasis However the association between HIF1α and clinicopathological characteristics of epithelial ovarian cancers is controversial We searched articles on the association between HIF1α expression and clinicopathological variables of epithelial ovarian cancer in Cochrane Library Pubmed Web of Knowledge and China National Knowledge Infrastructure CNKI from inception to February 2014 Twentyfive studies were included in the final review The expression of HIF1α in cancer or borderline tissue was significantly higher than that in benign tissue cancer vs benign odds ratio OR = 973 95 confidence interval CI 490 1932 P 000001 borderline vs benign OR = 629 95 CI 269–1473 P 00001 cancer vs borderline OR = 231 95 CI 104 509 P = 004 The expression of HIF1α in stages III–IV or lymph node metastasis was significantly higher than that in stages I–II or that without lymph node metastasis respectively OR = 301 95 CI 192–474 P 000001 OR = 520 95 CI 210–1289 P = 00004 HIF1α was associated with histological grade of cancer grades 3 vs 1 OR = 452 95 CI 279–731 P 000001 grades 3 vs 2 OR = 202 95 CI 127–319 P = 0003 grades 3 vs 1 OR = 243 95 CI 165–359 P 000001 and lower 5year survival rates OR = 1146 95 CI 343–3829 P 00001 However histological types and the age of patients were not associated with HIF1α expression OR = 101 95 CI 072 142 P = 094 OR = 106 95 CI 073–155 P = 075 In conclusion HIF1α is related to the malignant degree FIGO stage histological grade lymph node metastasis and 5year survival rate of epithelial ovarian cancer It may play an important role in clinical treatment and prognostic evaluation
