Abstract
The expression of galectin family has been unraveled in many malignant tumors and related with clinical outcomes Our current study aims to investigate the prognostic value of galectin8 expression and refine the current risk stratification system in nonmetastatic gastric cancer patients We retrospectively enrolled 421 patients with gastric cancer from Zhongshan Hospital Fudan University in 2008 The expression of galectin8 was detected by immunohistochemistry and its association with clinicopathological features and prognostic outcomes were assessed We found that galectin8 expression was significantly associated with tumor size P = 0007 T stage P = 0001 N stage P 0001 and tumor node metastasis TNM stage P 0001 In addition low galectin8 expression indicated poor overall survival OS P 0001 and diseasefree survival DFS P 0001 Furthermore galectin8 expression level was identified as an independent favorable prognostic factor for OS P 0001 A predictive nomogram was generated with identified independent prognosticators to evaluate patient OS at 3 and 5 years Our study suggested that galectin8 is a potential independent favorable prognostic biomarker for survival and recurrence of patients with gastric cancer after surgical resection and the integration of intratumoral galectin8 expression level into current TNM staging system would help to refine individual risk stratificationThis study was funded by grants from National Basic Research Program of China 2012CB822104 National Key Projects for Infectious Diseases of China 2012ZX10002012007 2016ZX10002018008 National Natural Science Foundation of China 31100629 31270863 81372755 31470794 81401988 81402082 81402085 81471621 81472227 81472376 31570803 81501999 and 81572352 and Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University NCET130146 All these study sponsors have no roles in the study design in the collection analysis and interpretation of dataS Wu for acquisition of data analysis and interpretation of data statistical analysis and drafting of the manuscript H Liu H Zhang C Lin R Li Y Cao H He and H Li for technical and material support Z Shen J Qin and J Xu for study concept and design analysis and interpretation of data drafting of the manuscript obtained funding and study supervision All authors read and approved the final manuscript
